ベンチの機能を無くす決断

もともとSTACKING SHELFという商品がありました。これはかなり古くからあるもので、棚としても、テーブルとしても、「ベンチとしても」使えるものとして作りました。

そのため耐荷重を上げるための構造にしなければならず、非常に重いのがネックでした。

人が座るとなると、それはただその重さに耐えられるだけではいけません。勢いよく座ると、実は瞬間的にその体重の何倍もの荷重が、ベンチにかかります。それを見越したうえでの構造設計にしなければいけないのです。（ちなみに元祖STACKING SHLEFは、１トンの荷重をかけてようやく壊れる設計です。）

ただ、長く販売してみると、このベンチの用途はあまり無いことに気づきます。ここがなければ、もっと軽くでき、棚としての取り回しもしやすくなります。

ということで、人が座るということを排除した分、軽くなり、扱いがしやすくなった、この「LIGHT」が生まれたのです。

The decision to drop the bench role

There was an original STACKING SHELF — quite an old product of ours. We made it to work as a shelf, as a table, and "as a bench" too.

Because of that bench role, the structure had to be over-engineered for weight, and the result was very heavy — its main downside.

When a person sits down, the structure can't just bear their static weight. Sit down with momentum and the bench takes loads several times that weight in the moment of impact. The design has to account for that. (For reference, the original STACKING SHELF only breaks under one ton of load.)

After selling it for years, though, we realized people rarely use the bench function. Strip that out, and we could make it lighter and easier to handle as a shelf.

So by removing the "people can sit on it" requirement, we got something lighter and easier to live with — and that's how this LIGHT version was born.

放弃"长椅"功能的抉择

原本有一款 STACKING SHELF，相当老的产品。设计目的是既可作层架、亦可作桌、还可"作长椅"使用。

因此结构必须满足较高承载，重量便成为短板。

供人就坐，其结构不能只满足静态承重。猛然落座之瞬间，长椅承受的载荷可达体重数倍。结构设计必须将此考虑在内。（顺便，初代 STACKING SHELF 加载至 1 吨方才损坏。）

但长期销售下来发现：将其作长椅使用的需求其实并不多。去掉这一功能，便可减重，作为层架使用也更易上手。

于是去除"人可就坐"这一要求后，重量减轻、使用更便利——便诞生了这只"LIGHT"。
