弟分の誕生

2018年に登場したCOOKING FIRE PITに、たくさんの絶賛の声をいただいていたのですが、同じだけ「重い」という声もいただいていました。（「重いのが良い」という声もありましたが）

結局、3台目で「LIGHT」を作ることにはなるのですが、まずはそのまま小さくしてみようということで出来たのが、このSOLOです。

姿はまさに弟分。比率を全部小さくできるわけではなく、要所の寸法はもとの焚き火台と同じなので、全体的にずんぐり丸い印象の、かわいい焚き火台が誕生しました。

実際作ってみるとそこまで軽いわけではないですし（LIGHTのほうが軽いです）、寸法を小さくしたので入る薪の寸法も小さくなり、いちいちノコギリで小さくしないといけなくなってはしまったのですが、なんというか、この小さな焚き火台で「やりくりする」のがとっても楽しいんですよね。実際このSOLOの根強いファンの方もいらっしゃいます。炭を主に使って、焼き鳥焼き台にされている方も。

ソロキャンにぴったりな大きさなので、テーブルもこの時、ぴったりなものを作りました。

使い方をユーザーに委ねる、というのは僕は好きではなくて、デザイナーの責任放棄のように感じてしまうんです。やはり使い方はこれ！という1本の筋は通すべき。でも、その脇にもいろいろな使い方が想像できる、というのが僕は一番良いものづくりのやり方だなと思っていて、このSOLOはまさにそんな製品に仕上がったと自負しています。

Enter the little brother

The 2018 COOKING FIRE PIT received plenty of praise — and just as many "it's heavy" remarks (along with "heavy is good," to be fair).

In the end, the third in the line would become "LIGHT," but before that we wanted to try simply shrinking the original — and that's how this SOLO came about.

The look is unmistakably the little brother. Not every dimension could be scaled down — key spec dimensions stay the same as the original — so the result is a stout, rounded, charming little fire pit.

In practice it isn't all that light (LIGHT is lighter), and because the body is smaller the firewood has to be smaller too, so you end up sawing wood down piece by piece. But there's something about making it work with this tiny fire pit that's a lot of fun. SOLO has its own devoted fans, including people who use it mostly with charcoal as a yakitori grill.

Sized perfectly for solo camping, so we made a perfectly-sized table to go with it.

I don't like leaving usage entirely up to the user — to me that feels like the designer abdicating responsibility. There should be one clear way the thing is meant to be used. But alongside that, the user can imagine other ways too — that, I think, is the best kind of product. And SOLO turned out exactly like that, I'm proud to say.

弟弟款诞生

2018 年问世的 COOKING FIRE PIT 收获大量赞誉，同时也收获同样多的"偏重"反馈（也有"重才好"的声音）。

最终第三款做成了"LIGHT"，而在此之前，我们先尝试将原款单纯缩小——便是这只 SOLO。

外观正如弟弟款。并非所有比例都可缩小，关键尺寸沿用原款，故而整体呈现敦厚浑圆之感，憨态可掬。

实际并不算特别轻（LIGHT 更轻），尺寸缩小后能放入的柴火也变小，需用锯子一块块裁开。但用这只小小的焚火台"巧妙周旋"，颇有乐趣。SOLO 有不少坚定粉丝，亦有人主要用炭，将它当作烤鸡串台使用。

尺寸正适合单人露营，因此我们也同步开发了一只完美适配的桌。

我不喜欢"用法交由使用者"——觉得那是设计师推卸责任。该有一条明确的"主用法"贯穿。但与此同时，使用者也能想象出其他用法——这才是最佳的造物方式。我自信 SOLO 正是这样的产品。
